There are those that can handle the extra heat and, well, those who probably need to sit out a round.
The latter seems to have been the case then police and fire were forced to show up at recently at a high school, rushing more than a dozen people to the hospital.
It wasn’t the summer heat that caused them to break more than a sweat, it was the heat coming from a container of extremely spicy chips. The chips were labeled Curry Chips and were marked specifically on the packaging as something just for those ages 18 and older. That didn’t stop a group of high schoolers in Japan from trying them out, though.
According to several online reports, around 30 students at a Japanese high school taste tested the chips after a classmate brought them to school. Unfortunately, the fun turned serious when 14 or so of the kiddos started complaining of mouth pain, stomach pain, and nausea. Firefighters and police were reportedly called to the school, and it seems some of the kids did have to go to the hospital. The chips are made by a company called Isoyama Corp. While the company wished the kids a swift recovery, it should be noted there’s a warning about the 18 and older age restriction for a reason.
The chips are made with bhut jolokia, also known as the ghost pepper. The potent pepper comes from Northeast India and is thought to be one of the hottest chilies on the planet. The hybrid pepper is no joke. It can top one million on the Scoville scale. Sure, true heat aficionados are always searching for the best new thing, but ghost pepper chips aren’t for the faint of heart, and in this case, not for kids. Like anything, it’s best to start off your pepper journey on the lower end of the heat scale and build up some tolerance before digging in to one of the world’s hottest peppers with no warning.
