If you’ve ever found yourself tossing and turning at night, or dealing with indigestion, it could be related to those late-night snacks.

Sure, it may sound like a good idea to curb your hunger pains until the morning hours, but late-night snacking isn’t always the smartest thing to do. That’s because eating certain foods too late at night can mess with your sleep, or sometimes make you suffer from something even worse than hunger.

Unfortunately, spicy food falls into one of those categories.

That’s why it’s something you may want to snack on earlier in the night. Eating too much spicy food, especially late at night, can sometimes give you stomach problems. Eating spicy food, like hot peppers, can also produce heat in your body. For those reasons, you may want to get your spicy food fix earlier in the evening. Of course, hot peppers are full of health benefits, so be sure and plan out your spicy meals and snacks so you don’t end up eating them right before bedtime. Remember, there are all kinds of varieties of peppers out there to try, with varying degrees of heat on the hot pepper scale.

A couple of other things could also make you feel sick to your stomach late at night.

Citrus fruits, including oranges and lemons, can sometimes give you gas or indigestion if you consume them too late in the evening. Eating tomatoes right before bedtime can also lead to gas acidity. That’s a good reason why you may want to reserve tomatoes for a time earlier in the evening. One more food choice to avoid late at night is dark chocolate. Your stomach may be fine, but dark chocolate can make your mind more active. This, in turn, makes it more difficult to fall asleep at night.
