The secret ingredient to a tasty “Cup of Joe”

If you can’t function without your morning cup of coffee, or even multiple cups throughout the day, you may already have a favorite.

A good “Cup of Joe” usually hits the spot, and sometimes you might go back for multiple cups. But what if you could take something as ordinary as coffee, and make it extraordinary? We’re not talking about buying into the hype of trying the latest and most expensive coffee on the market, either. Instead, it may be as simple as grabbing a bottle of something you probably already have in your own kitchen and taking your cup of coffee up a notch on the heat scale.

It may sound a little strange at first, but you don’t have to rely on just extra sugar and sweeteners.

Flavored syrups or half and half to give your morning coffee an extra boost. The next time you feel like you need an extra jolt to make it through the day, why not grab your favorite hot sauce? Some say it’s the perfect combination. It may sound a little odd in the beginning, but that’s probably what people said before they tried putting jalapenos in margaritas or tasted Mexican hot chocolate. There’s something to be said about not being afraid to try something new, even something as seemingly ordinary as coffee.

Using something from the hot pepper scale has possible health benefits, too.

Capsaicin, which is naturally found in hot peppers, is said to help with everything from heart health to weight loss. When you add that to some of the known health benefits of coffee already, you’re in for a real treat! You may want to start with a light or medium roast coffee so it doesn’t overpower the hot sauce. On the flip side, a hot sauce with a lot of vinegar in it may also not give you the taste you desire. When you do find the right combo, remember, you probably only need a drop or so of hot sauce to enjoy the perks of spiced-up coffee.
